At many Dance and Music Studios, like mine, the recital is the highlight of the season. As a parent, I know you have questions and you desire to make this a memorable event for you and your family. I’m here to help. At our studio, our families look forward to this exciting performance. This year we’ve even got 40 (that’s right) 40 DADS rehearsing for the upcoming Gala. 
Remember recitals are an opportunity to expose your family to a part of culture that they might not ordinarily experience. Children are immersed in the popular music of today. At our show they will get the opportunity to hear Classical Ballet, Broadway Show Tunes, Popular….many, many styles of music. I love teaching my students how to dance, how to sing, and give to the audiences. I also am inspired to teach our audiences to attend a performing arts event and experience the amazing gift of live performance.

We make the audition process fun for all dancers. Even dancers with limited training can benefit from attending our event. It’s very important to remember that auditioning is a "process." You don’t instantly perform your best audition by only taking class or dancing for yourself - it takes time. Attending our audition for free is a great way to improve your audition technique.
Auditions are a big part of any dancer’s life and they’re unavoidable. As a dancer, your main job is to dance your best at the audition, period. Most dancers think that making the team or getting the part is the most important thing. Remember this – you are being viewed for what you can do now and also what for we believe you have the potential to do in the future.
Getting Through The Audition
1. When you walk in, be friendly. Look the instructors in the eye and smile.
2. Once performing, do your best. Even if you are unsure of the movements, give it your best shot.
3. Once finished, pause and listen for more instructions.
4. Thank the instructors for the opportunity you have been given.
5. You may or may not get on the performance team; however, there is a placement for you. The instructors will let you know how well you performed. Be proud of your success.

What To Wear To The Audition

· Dance clothing-leotard & tights or dance pants and top.

· Dance shoes if you have them – barefoot is also acceptable.

· Hair in a bun or off your face in a ponytail.

· Present your best self – be neat & clean.

· You will receive an audition number at the audition. Place it wear it can easily be seen.

At my Dance & Music studio I am often asked questions about various styles of dancing. Dance is a lot like music in that the styles sometimes melt into each other and the detail of each discipline is not always seen by the novice performer. Here is a list of Jazz Dance Styles – this list will help you choose the style best suited for you or your child.
1. Classic Jazz: A blend of traditional dance elements that link together. Dancing over and between the downbeats of the music is a key technique. The style uses grounded positioning and various dance disciplines. This approach to dance was developed by early innovators of this classic style. Jack Cole, Gus Giordano, Bob Fosse & Luigi are famous for bringing Jazz dancing to the audiences and moving this style to the forefront of dance education.
2. Lyrical Jazz: A fluid style that blends movements from American modern dance, classic jazz, and European classical ballet. Also called, “Contemporary”, this style interprets lyrics through choreography. The performer has freedom of expression to interpret the style of music. This is a very popular style of dance seen at performances & competitions.
3. Musical Theatre Dance: A stylized form of dance that uses music, movement, comedy & narrative to support its style. A character is often portrayed as this style is used in Broadway Shows and other staged events. Also known as song & dance.
4. Hip-Hop: A huge umbrella term for many styles of dance. Also known as street dance, this style incorporates popping, locking, and break-dancing (old school). A mixture of movements from anywhere, anytime are known as, “new school”. Popular music (rap, funk, rhythm & blues, techno….) are incorporated to produce this ever popular folk dance.
