Don’t let it be the one thing you forgot to make your day the best it can be. Dance lessons cost less than your cake and having a First Dance to WOW your audience  is a great value and a great way to make your reception memorable for everyone. Wagner Dance and Music offers the best value for money and best facilities of any dance school in the area and provides many ‘little extras’ including original choreography, music selection and rehearsal.wedding dance 2

You spend a great deal of time, effort and money on making sure your wedding day is perfect. Perfect man, perfect dress, perfect hair, perfect flowers, make-up, cake, photographs etc so why not add the perfect first dance instead of that boring rock dance?

We teach a huge range of dance styles so you could do anything from a lovely, lilting waltz to a pop, lock & drop hip-hop number. We can choreograph a personalized routine to your chosen music or teach you one of the all time greats like Dirty Dancing or Saturday Night Fever to WOW your guests.  If casual, informal is your style, you could even just learn a few moves that you could, “freestyle” at your reception. It can be as simple or as complex as you want. The important thing is that we work on the dance with you so that you are confident and delighted to perform YOUR first dance!  We want you to ENJOY YOURSELF.

Lessons usually last one hour but this can be extended to two hours if you are short of time. Half hour lessons are also available if you want to squeeze one into a lunch break. We teach daytime,  evenings and weekends so you can have a lesson whenever it suits you. You can have as many lessons per week as necessary to get you totally prepared for your special day.  Contact us now to discuss your booking.  Lessons are held in our studio in Gilbert. We have excellent, professional standard, facilities with 2 large mirrored studios with wooden sprung dance floors.

Lessons are relaxed, informal and fun. They can be for just the bride and groom or you could also bring along your bridesmaids, best man or we can do amazing productions with your entire wedding party. We tailor lessons and the routine to suit you so don’t worry about it being to difficult or too fast. Any number of lessons will ensure you do more than the rock step,  but we usually recommend about 5 or 6 for a simple routine. However, it is up to you. You can have as many or as few as you feel you need. Don’t leave it until the last minute though and give yourself as much time as you can. Visit our wedding dance page for lesson costs and payment information.

Wedding First Dance is AWESOME

The only word that comes to mind when I teach Wedding Couples is - AWESOME.  We just completed a final lesson before the wedding and it was the first time the groom got through the whole dance with confidence.  We videotaped the bride and groom doing the full dance and I was amazed at how much this couple was able to learn even though they were only with the instructor for a few short lessons.

They are confident that at the wedding reception the audience will be amazed, delighted, and awestruck!

Although the bride and groom may make mistakes or forget little things as we go along, they know  the best ways to make those mistakes invisible to the audience and when the couple watched themselves on tape, even they couldn’t notice the missteps, even though they knew they had made them.  The entire routine looked seamless!
I cant put into words how happy and excited the groom was at the thought of being able to give his bride the "first dance" she has always dreamed of and without seeking professional instruction, it would never have been possible. At Wagner Dance and Music we have great teachers and they really knows what to do to create an exquisite wedding dance that is truly unforgettable.  I would without a doubt recommend our teachers to anyone who is getting married and wants to amaze their crowd.
I recall the first time I saw the groom, he wasn’t exactly confident that he would be able to do even half of what he can do now on the dance floor. He’s learned to keep the beat of the music,  twirl his angel around, and most importantly…how to dip her and make her smile!   It is awesome to see a couple leave our studio with confidence and totally prepared for their very special occasion.  They will truly have a Wedding First Dance

to remember!

Dancing Dads

In the dance studio world everyone is familiar with the term, “Stage Mom” – you know the one, putting on too much make-up and stressing over the costumes.  Stage Moms have gotten a bad rap, but let’s be honest, the dance studio world would not function without them.  But what about the Dads?

Some Dance and Music studios simply ignore the Dads and assume they are disinterested.  But at my studio, Wagner Dance Arts, we have discovered a way to include our Dads in a BIG WAY.  Our production of the Daddy/Daughter dance has become a tradition for many of our dancer’s Dads.

This past June we had 45 Dads & Daughters participate in a dance that WOWED the audience and melted hearts of those who danced and those who watched.

The dads that participate in the Daddy/Daughter dance are very supportive of their daughter’s dance education.  They don’t question the bill because they see the benefits.  Spending the quality time of rehearsal and performance with their daughters is a priceless event.

So, Dads, I’m talking to you – no dance experience necessary – just a little bit of time and a BIG HEART!  Join us for the next Daddy/Daughter Dance.  Visit my studio located in east valley, call 480-892-7179.  Don’t hesitate and miss the opportunity to create memories, build relationship and melt hearts.

Every little girl loves to dream, they love to imagine, they love to create.

This week we are hosting Princess Fairy Camps, and wow!, the dreaming is big!   Our little dancers are having so much fun dancing and singing in the Princess Fairyland and our tea parties are to die for!  The children are learning to dance like no one is watching and to sing like someone IS listening.

Wearing a tiara and spinning with your magic wand is an experience all little girls want – after all, we were princess born and we are elegant and presentational by nature.  Why not develop those natural born talents and become a crown wearing, wand carrying, dancing beauty?

At my studio, Wagner Dance Arts, our heart is that all little girls who want to dance should have the opportunity.  We know we can’t reach every little girl, but we are starting in Gilbert and spreading to the entire east valley.  To celebrate the greatness of each little girl, we have a special JULY PRICE for our dance camps.

So, get those kids out of the sun and into their princess wear for an afternoon tea party and a ballroom of dancing and singing – they will absolutely LOVE to be at our studio.  We guarantee fun and education!

Please stop by and visit or call us at 480-892-7179 and let your child dream!

Dance Recital Etiquette – part 2

09.06.09 / Audition, Ballet, Dance, Dance Lessons, Dance Studio, dance class, hip hop, jazz dancing, recital, summer camp / Author: webmaster / Comments: (0)

Denise Wagner, Artistic Director

We applaud all our dancers – from the tiniest 2 year old to the 50 year old dancer – everyone is a star in my studio!  Recital is just around the corner. Our performance is June 27 at Higley Performing Arts Center.  Dancers & backstage Moms, here is another list to make your backstage experience awesome:

Jazz2 1.  Don’t pull focus – when a dancer is onstage performing, don’t walk in the aisles, switch seats, talk loudly in the wings…. in other words, respect the dancer who is rehearsing/performing on stage.  Whether they are performing Classical Ballet or a hot Jazz routine, whether they are a beginning student or an accomplished entertainer, let’s support their efforts.

2.  Do be a role model – AS a backstage mom/dresser, it’s obvious that you have our dancers’ best interest at heart..  But the dancers – even the teens- are still kids.  It’s up to you to model what’s right.  They look up to you, and even when you think they are not watching, they probably are!  Teach the kids the spirit of service you are so generously portraying by volunteering to work backstage. By the way – did I say THANK YOU? – well, THANK YOU!

3.  Do be prepared – I entered one of our studio rooms the other day and our Ballet Mistress had written this on the white board, “Performance rule – It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”  So true.  As a dancer or backstage MOM, be prepared with bobby pins, safety pins, extra tights, lipstick, hairspray……Remember – this is the opportunity for our students to shine!

At my studio, Wagner Dance Arts

We have the absolute best support team of dance MOMS, ever!  Come see for yourself – you will be amazed – at how incredibly smooth are our picture days, rehearsal days,  & performance days.  When we show our dance families respect, they thank us for it – and guess what, they give it right back to us!

Your Child’s Dance Class

22.04.09 / Audition, Dance, Dance Lessons, camp, dance class, sing, summer camp / Author: webmaster / Comments: (0)

Do you have your child enrolled in dance class?  Are you wondering what you can do to support their love of dance?  In the last blog I mentioned how you encourage your child to practice, stretch….. Today let’s talk about little known tips to get the most out of your child’s lessons.  After all, money doesn’t grow on trees and we all want value for our dollar.

Placement is so very important.  Your child may learn best when they are the, “head of the class”.  Some children actually function best and learn best while teaching others who may not be as experienced or as old.  Other children are the complete opposite – they want to be challenged and challenged with the best of them.

At my studio, Wagner Dance & Music, we evaluate and place children so they are able to perform at their top level.  We encourage parents to ask questions, get involved and get the most out of your dance education.  Here are a few more tips on dance and taking dance class:

1. Listen to music. Provide your child with a variety of music styles. Let them listen to everything from Broadway Show Tunes to Classical Variations to Hip Hop Funk.

2. Proper attire. Make sure your child has the proper dance clothing and dance shoes. Your dance studio will be able to help you understand the requirements for each class. Dress like a dancer, dance like a dancer.

3. Performance time is the time to shine. Once your child has attended their classes, worked hard, practiced their routine and prepared for stage. Sit back and enjoy the talent that has been created. Tell your child how proud you are of their accomplishments.

4. Make friends. It is great to have friends who share the same interests. Dance friends love to dance together, practice new moves and choreograph. Dancing together increases creativity, team work and friendship.

Jazz Dancing vs. Hip Hop Dancing

At my Dance & Music studio I am often asked questions about various styles of dancing.  Dance is a lot like music in that the styles sometimes melt into each other and the detail of each discipline is not always seen by the novice performer.  Here is a list of Jazz Dance Styles – this list will help you choose the style best suited for you or your child.

1.  Classic Jazz:  A blend of traditional dance elements that link together.  Dancing over and between the downbeats of the music is a key technique.  The style uses grounded positioning and various dance disciplines.  This approach to dance was developed by early innovators of this classic style.  Jack Cole, Gus Giordano, Bob Fosse & Luigi are famous for bringing  Jazz dancing to the audiences and moving this style to the forefront of dance education.

2.  Lyrical Jazz:  A fluid style that blends movements from American modern dance, classic jazz, and European classical ballet.  Also called, “Contemporary”, this style interprets lyrics through choreography.  The performer has freedom of expression to interpret the style of music. This is a very popular style of dance seen at performances & competitions.

3.  Musical Theatre Dance:  A stylized form of dance that uses music, movement, comedy  & narrative to support its style.  A character is often portrayed as this style is used in Broadway Shows and other staged events.   Also known as song & dance.

4.  Hip-Hop:  A huge umbrella term for many styles of dance.  Also known as street dance, this style incorporates popping, locking, and break-dancing (old school).  A mixture of movements from anywhere, anytime are known as, “new school”.  Popular music (rap, funk, rhythm & blues, techno….) are incorporated to produce this ever popular folk dance.

At Wagner Dance & Music, we offer all these dance styles, and many more.  Come and explore the world of performing arts and be prepared to, “bust a move.”  Audition on May 15 for our Dance Elite Performance Team.   See you at the studio!

Too Young to Dance? I don’t think so!

At my dance studio, Wagner Dance & Music, we teach all ages including little, bitty, pretty ones.   It is amazing how 3 year old dancers take creativity to the unimaginable levels.

A dancer’s carriage is easy identifiable.  Young dancers take on the beautiful presentation of a polished performer.  As dancers, we experience ourselves at a deep level, and it is demonstrated in our sense of who we are.  It’s not just the training our bodies never forget, it’s the discipline and purpose with which dance is learned that leaves a lasting impression.   We simply do not clunk through life, we dance through it!

One day I as I watched my students put on their street shoes and head towards the door, I realized that they are leaving with a set of skills that go beyond a simple plie or grand jete.  They are carrying with them something rare and precious – the gift of dance.

Join me at the studio and give yourself or your child a gift to cherish – DANCE!   For more information email me at info@wagnerdancearts.com

It’s Recital Time!

25.03.09 / Ballet, Dance, Dance Education, Dance Lessons, recital / Author: webmaster / Comments: (0)

by Denise Wagner, Artistic Director

At my performing arts academy, the recital is the highlight of the year.

I see the recital as an opportunity to expose my students to a part of culture they might not ordinarily experience.  Kids are immersed with the music and dancing of today, why not educate and show them something different?  I see that as part of my job.  We live in a sporting-event mentality and it is my experience that people need and want to be educated about the theatre and its’ etiquette.cb37

It’s typical of hip hop crowds watching dancing on the street to go into what is called, Ballpark mode with yelling and screaming throughout the kids routine.  Although yelling & whistling have a place, a better way to encourage a young performer on stage is with applause and, “Bravo!”  The old standard, “Break a Leg” still works as a theatre tradition.

Ultimately, the recital is a time to shine and whether our dancers are performing classical ballet, traditional tap, sassy jazz or a beautiful contemporary routine, the dancers love their audience.  Being in a gorgeous theatre and being surrounded by culture and art is a new experience for many and the elegant event is magical.

It is my responsibility as a dance educator to teach my students not only how to dance but also how to attend or perform in a performing arts event.  By teaching our students and their families to appreciate what they seeing, we elevate the performance to the art is is.  After all, it is called performing arts and not performing sports.

Our Recital this season is, “I HOPE YOU DANCE” and you are all invited to attend the performance.  Please email me if you want tickets www.info@wagnerdancearts.com.  I hope to see you at the beautiful Higley Performing Arts Center on June 27 for a wonderful evening of dance.

On With The Show!

Five Must-Do Tips for Auditions

  1. Learn the choreography being shown – This builds confidence.
  2. Use positive mental images – Imagery is a powerful tool.  “See” yourself dancing
  3. Listen to key words – when the teacher gives information.
  4. Maintain a wide focus – Look around the studio, see others in the mirror.  Make sure your line matches.
  5. Have Fun – Let the other dancers give you power!

The last tip – the fun tip -  is by far the most important.  The audition crew want to work with dancers who have fun while learning.  When you put on that big smile and are willing to laugh at yourself – you and the other performers are exciting to watch.  Dance is fun to do, fun to watch and most of all, fun to share.  The more you share your gift of dance, the bigger it gets – IT’S AMAZING!

Join us for our next auditions and join the fun.  We are auditioning for the upcoming season, ages 6 and up are welcome.  You don’t have to have experience, but talent is a must! Our specialty is finding that hidden talent in you.

SAVE THE DATE - AUDITIONS ARE SCHEDULED FOR MAY 15!
